La Fête de La Crevette et de La Peche

Listed under Harvests & Food Festivals in Le Havre, France.

Although by the time they get to our plates the prawns we eat are pink, the shrimp and fish festival in Honfleur celebrates ‘la petite grise’, the small grey shrimps that are the speciality of the port. During the festival traditional sailing boats, that were formerly used to catch fish, are invited into the port and the old town takes on the appearance of bygone years. There are practical demonstrations of boat rigging on old fashion craft, stalls selling all types of fresh fish and seafood and lots of old sea shanty concerts to entertain you. Whilst you mingle around looking at the different artist’s stalls and demonstrations you can try some freshly cooked shrimp from one of the food stalls allowing you to enjoy the sights, sounds and taste of Honfleur. The highlight of the day is the annual prawn peeling competition where the hardy locals peel as many shrimp in an allotted time leaving you with the simple task of eating them afterwards. The festival finishes off with a huge fireworks display in the evening out over the water which is accompanied by the strong smell of the shrimp shells that by the end of the day litter the floor around you.
