Of all the places in the world, the town of Argana, in the province of Agadir, is said to have one of the biggest beehive collections, if not the largest.
If it is not the largest beehive collection in the world, then it is most definitely Morocco's largest producer of honey. In May, people from all over come to celebrate the honey harvest. The process in which honey is taken from the hives is as famous as the honey itself. The majority of the hives are made of split reed cylinders covered in clay, so no impurities can enter the hive and ruin the honey's quality. The queen bee and her workers are then forced out of the hive during the harvest into a basket through the use of a smoking brazier so honey can be collected. Besides getting an in-depth look at this intricate way of extracting honey from the hive, visitors get the chance to come home with pure honey at good prices.
