Just like Champagne, the famous Parmigiano-Reggiano name can only be branded onto cheese fabricated in the small producing areas of and in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Within this region the process of cheese making has remained much the same as it was in the 13th century and produces the original and best parmesan cheese. To celebrate this, and to congratulate themselves on a job well done for another year, the region throws an annual Fiera del Parmigiano-Reggiano in the town of Casina. Not only can you taste the parmesan itself, brushed with a little olive oil or dipped in balsamic vinegar from neighbouring Modena, but there are also Parma hams, olives, fresh cheeses and wines to fill up the largest tummy. Whilst you eat you can wander around the artist and craft market, listen to local music groups or even watch live demonstrations of the cheese being made by the experienced dairy farmers of the region. Funnily enough, all this gastronomy is combined with a fashion parade that concludes with the election of the region’s nomination for Miss Italy, whose victory is marked with a huge fireworks display for all to enjoy.
