Las Jornadas del Olivar y el Aceite, as it's properly known, celebrates the completion of the olive harvest and all the resulting products made from Baena's famously ancient strain of olives – one of only two in Spain, the country which produces nearly half of all the world's olive oil. If it's a gastronomic adventure you're after then you won't be disappointed, since there'll be newly-pressed, fruity oils to dip your local bread in as you learn how to taste them, cookery demonstrations and of course last years' fantastic pickled varieties to try. As well as being blanketed with miles of olive-groves, the surrounding hills are scattered with vineyards so there's plenty more local produce to investigate and take home.

It's also possible to take part in the last of the harvest itself, learn about the growing and processing methods, and even explore the history of our relationship with the olive tree itself, which dates back further than biblical times, at the town's olive museum.

Gonzalo de Cordova's Moorish castle stands on the hilltop above Baena, overlooking the river Marbella, and there's also a number of Roman archaeological gems to discover amongst the rows of whitewashed houses.
