This sturdy, brick house appears to have been transported directly from medieval English countryside, it is typical English cottage architecture. A sturdy brick house with herb and flower gardens, and one of the oldest American homes open to the public, it sits near the bank of the Lynnhaven River. With its steep pitched roof and massive chimneys, it has an English Jacobean look. There is nothing ostentatious about this quaint house, with only four rooms (two on each floor), and gardens with box hedges, herbs, and flowering bulbs. The northern chimney is set within the wall, to warm the house against the north winds, with the southern on the exterior.

This house is believed to have belonged to Adam Thoroughgood, an indentured servant who arrived in Virginia in 1622. He became a community leader, a member of the House of Burgesses and was granted 5,350 acres of land. The house that stands here now realistically probably belonged to the great-grandson of Adam Thoroughgood. This house is one of the oldest from the early Colonial period and it gives insight into the lives of the people at that time. The house is open every day of the week except Monday and prices range from $2-$4 and children under the age of 5 are free.
