The humid, windy grasslands south Buenos Aires are known as the Pampas, fertile home to a range of interesting bird life and Gauchos, the South American Cowboys. The mix of sunny weather with grasses, lillies, reeds and cattails sets the scene for fires which tend to destroy all but the hardy grasses keeping the vista flat and treeless.
