The lighthouse in the distance is a famous marker for this seaside course, built on the site of the ruined castle of Robert the Bruce. It’s par 70 and more carefully manicured than most Scottish courses.
Great Opens have been played out on the Turnberry links, more specifically on the Alisa course where the famous 1977 duel took place between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. Alisa’s first three holes are the most difficult and the ninth, tenth and eleventh run amongst narrow crags, just to add that extra drama – the ninth is the most famous for being both attractive and challenging, and it’s where you get the best view of the lighthouse. The middle holes run along the dunes and the last few further inland, they're less spectacular visually, but the golf is just as good. The romanticists say the sunsets here are like a theatrical curtain being drawn – slightly overdramatic, but the photos certainly look spectacular.
