The Old Course at St. Andrews is like the Vatican of the golfing world. It's one of the oldest courses in the world, but it's still considered one of the best. No one is quite sure how long golf has been played here but there's a written licence dated 1552 that states that the public had permission to use the grounds for “rearing rabbits and play at golf, futball, schuteing... with all other manner or past times.”. But there's evidence that King James IV purchased golf clubs in St. Andrews in 1506. Originally there was no real design plan and the course just evolved without formal direction, but Old Tom Morris aid his hands on it in 1863 when he separated off the first green – interestingly some of St. Andrew's holes still share greens with each other. Another interesting St. Andrews fact is that it can be played both clockwise and anti-clockwise, though the standard play is anti-clockwise.

The lovely old Royal and Ancient Gold Club of St Andrews club house sits alongside the first tee, but they don't actually own the course, there are several clubs who have rights to play on it, and it's also open to the general public – its land is actually owned by the St Andrews Links Trust, as decreed by an act of Parliament.
