Shinnecock Hills Golf Course has a long golfing tradition. Among its claims to fame are being America's oldest organised golf club, having the oldest clubhouse in the US and being the first one to admit women, which isn't hard seeing as it has right from the start when it opened its doors in 1891. It also says, with pride, that it's played host to the US Open in three different centuries. At the dawn of its history it was only a 12 hole course, built on sand dunes not far from New York that were scurrilously reputed to be Indian burial grounds, but three years after it was opened another six holes were added bringing it up to full size.

The current 6,996 yard course owes its layout and design to William Flynn, who did a redesign in 1937, but the news layout kept five of the original holes.

It's not just historic though, Shinnecock Hills ranked second in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses for 2007, 2008, and third in 2009.
