There are eight golf courses at Pinehurst, but No. 2 is the one people talk about with reverence. The hushed tones are because it has a reputation for being a challenge, it's long and the layout feels slightly unruly, though that's a design challenge rather than a failing. The topography is more varied than most people find comfortable and the bunkers pop up when you're least expecting them to swallow your ball and your game. Both your long and short games of golf are tested on this course and the designer David Ross thought it was his best work. He's not the only one, it's hosted more championships than any other American course.

The first hole of the No. 2 course is a short, straight per 4, apparently Ross thought it was only sporting to let golfers start off with a good score.
