The Pine Valley course is designer George Arthur Crump's first and only course design and he set himself some rules when planning the layout: no more than two holes were allowed to be arranged in the same direction, no holes were allowed to be laid out parallel to the next and players shouldn't be able to see any holes but the ones they were playing, he also thought that a good course should require every club in a gold bag. In order to fulfil these principles the land had to be drained and 22,000 trees and their stumps had to be removed – and this was all at a time when course architects didn't go in for a lot of earth moving. The resulting course is challenging and very varied – just as the man wished it to be. It's also frequently mentioned at the top of lists of the world's best courses.
