The Pebble Beach course is frequently referred to as one of the world's most beautiful – so beautiful in fact that in 2001 it became the first public golf course to be named America's Best (by Golf Digest). Most of the loveliness has been achieved by building as many holes as possible along the rocky lip of this peninsular jutting out into the Pacific Ocean and reducing the wind and view breaks in between. The basic layout is of a figure 8 with the third whole facing directly towards the ocean and the fourth and fifth run right along the coast, as do the final three holes.

It's certainly good to know that it's open to the public but the downside is that the green fees are some of the world's priciest.

Pebble Beach hosted the US Open in 2000 for the fourth time and 2010s will be the fifth.

If you don’t golf or want to avoid some hefty green fees, try dinner at one of my favorite Italian restaurants, Peppoli, inside The Inn at Spanish Bay.
