This links style course has a pretty prestigious name, and a reputation for being a little on the snooty side in the clubhouse. It's also never hosted a major men's championship, however it belongs on the list of great courses for a few reasons. One of them is that it hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922, and it will again host the Cup in 2013. Another is that several of the holes are patterned on great holes from other great courses: the 2nd hole is based on the par 4 3rd hole at the Royal St. George, the 7th hole is based on the par 5 that's the 17th hole of the St. Andrews course and the 13th is a spit for St Andrews' par 3 11th hole.

Designed by Charles Blair Macdonald, who came from the St. Andrews school of the 1870s, in 2009 'Golf Digest' placed the National Golf Links of America at number 15 on its list of America's Greatest Golf Courses.
