Muirfield is one of the courses on the Open Championship rota, which means it's one of the best in the UK. Old Tom Morris designed the course in 1891, and because it's hosted so many championships and Ryder, Curtis and Walker Cups it's been played by most of the world's top golfers since it was opened.
Muirfield's first hole is one of its hardest, and one of the hardest opening holes on the circuit. Its a par 4 travelling 444 yards of narrow fairway between large bunkers on the left and rough rough to the right. Once you're on the green it slopes from front to back.
The Championship run is 6,970 yards for a par 70 and although it's lined with 151 bunkers and patches of very thick rough its also got a reputation for being fair: 'cruelly fair', said one winner, Henry Cotton.
