Host of the 2009 Walker Cup and the 2013 US Open, Merion East is one of the smallest courses on the circuit, laid out over only 126 acres – most courses are around 250 – which is why it has a reputation of being the best golf club in the world acre for acre. The other side of that reputation comes from the quality of the course, and it's played host to more Championships than any other American course so there must be something in it.

The design is reminiscent of some of the famous British links courses – this was the designers first course, so he spent time appreciating the great courses of Scotland and England before committing to his design. It's a course for great strategists, you have to come at the green from the right side of the fairway to make any headway and hopefully land on the right part of the green – if you don't you're up for an additional putt. The course also requires a variety of different shots to cope with the doglegs, and uphill/ downhill shots.

The club is private and exclusive with it, so you need an invitation to play. But for many it's the spiritual home of American golf so it's worth the effort.
