Crystal Downs is an Alister MacKenzie course, over 18 holes and 6,518 yards – all supposed to be taken in 70 swings or under. Hills deflect the ball from a straight run on this course, in fact it's fair to say that this is a very hilly course, which makes its greens particularly difficult. Putting amongst all those undulating hills is a challenge so bear that in mind if you can get an invitation to play here – it's a private course.

One of the most challenging shots of the course is the 7th hole, when the golfer is confronted with a tree in the middle of the fairway just in front of the green – so you have to hill your ball over the tree – which isn't easy, but then it's not supposed to be easy is it! The following hole, the 8th, is one of the hardest on the course: it's not just an uphill slog, this hole also requires you to slog uphill for 550 yards in only five swings, changing direction as you head UP the fairway. But after that the terrain evens out before undulating like mad again – which makes it a varied and entertaining course.
