Stourhead is most perfect example of an English landscape garden. It was inspired by Claude Lorrain's vision of a golden age in which the architecture was classical and landscapes were peopled by handsome men and beautiful shepherdesses, usually enjoying the evening sunshine. The garden is set in a valley and has a lake as its central feature. A walk represents the journey taken by Rome's founder – Aeneas. There are many small temples ('follies') in the garden, including a Temple of Flora, a Pantheon and a Temple of Apollo. A spring visit is best for the rhododendrons, a fall visit for autumn colour – and a winter visit to appreciate the serenity of the composition. http://www.gardenvisit.com/
