This place is considered both a botanical and artistic masterpiece – a garden in which are exhibited tiles collected from Portuguese palaces, private homes, churches and chapels, and those of the former Portuguese empire. One of the largest pieces depicts the highlights of Portugal's history in 40 tiled panels. The rest of the garden snakes over many levels, joined by paths, steps and bridges over ponds and waterfalls. Beyond the tiles, the Monte garden's have the world's tallest vase, olive trees more than 100 years old, some rare and exotic orchids, koi ponds in the japanese gardens and beautiful views – the garden spreads down Monte's hill, and can also be reached by the cable car.

The actual palace is closed to the public but the museum is open daily from 10:30 (check details close to travel for exact opening times).
