If you’ve heard of these gardens you may have seen or heard the name in association with a green roofed pavilion, which is where sultans were known to have stayed in the summer, surrounded by citrus orchards and olive groves on the edge of an artificial lake which waters the lush gardens. The intimate workings of the gardens reveal that it was hard work to create such a beautiful setting for the sultan – the water for the lake comes from the mountains about 30 kilometres away and waters the garden via a series of deeply dug canals.

Entrance is free and the nicest time to stroll though the gardens is the last hour before it closes at 6PM. The atmosphere is romantic, even by Islamic standards, and it’s far more so without as many tourists walking around with their cameras.
