Held annually in Earl’s Court, London the Great British Beer Festival is a Mecca for awnings, beer stalls and avid consumers of alcohol. Organised by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, the Festival aims to educate people about the value of locally produced and historically significant beers, ales, bitters and cider, and the difference between them, if you weren’t already aware there was any. This year saw the introduction of a new event to the festival with a free crash-course in beer appreciation for girls. The Girls Guide Tours, led by beer expert Melissa Cole dispelled amongst its students the hackneyed associations of beer with dart-throwing builders, instilling in them instead a heightened appreciation for its production process and complexity of taste. On auction was the opportunity to stay at the world famous Budweiser Budvar brewery in Prague, and learn how to brew your own beer. The Great British Beer Festival is a must for fans of the stuff, and for anyone who wants to know what makes the country tick.
