If you're not from the states you might not have heard of Gilroy or its Garlic-y fest at all, and it might surprise you to read that it claims to be one of the largest food festivals in the US.

It's held annually around the end of July and celebrates all things garlic by featuring garlic in all things: from ice cream to french fries (OK, so fries with garlic sounds pretty good really...). There's also entertainment, the crowning of the 'Garlic Queen and her Garlic Court', and of course a great garlic cook-off. It may seem a bit random but it would appear that there are many fans of the pungent bulb out there and these events are largely held for non garlic related charities. So it's not just a bunch of people breathing their stinky breath all over each other... I wonder if they do garlic mints or garlic gum?
