Mid-October is oyster-dredging season, and there are few better places to go than Falmouth if you want to make the most of it. This pretty Cornish seaside town, famed for its deep natural harbour and for 16th century Pendennis Castle, is one of the country's last traditional oyster fishing communities. You'll have chance to learn traditional and modern oyster-cooking methods, watch an oyster-shucking competition and an oyster boat race and of course eat as many of the tasty, sea-flavoured little morsels as you can while they last.
If oysters aren't really your thing, then not to worry: this festival is also an opportunity for an indulgent foray into the world of Cornish seafood and local produce in general, so there'll be a vast array of wines, beers and farm produce on offer, too, as well as master-classes with a celebrity chef, events for children (such as craft fairs and shell painting), live music and a festival parade.
