Sauveterre-de-Rouergue's ripe-coloured, stone and half-timbered houses snuggle against a ruin-topped hill overlooking an idyllic valley, dotted with little churches and crossed by a winding stream. Its ancient chestnut trees are prolific producers and the local cider resulting from the orchard fruit harvests is said to be of singular quality, too – so every October, a traditional festival is held to celebrate both. The cobbled central square buzzes with light and colour late into the night, so why not enjoy some seasonal treats and a traditional concert after a day spent walking through crisp Autumn leaves in the surrounding countryside?
