It’s not the prettiest place from the ground, the high desert plateaus are mostly scrub, but the range elevations are up to 45000 metres and the valleys are deep and winding, so what makes the wind good also enhances the view of the range and an active volcano or two have been thrown in for added drama.
This is a pretty well know site, it hosted the 1998 Mexican National Competition and the launch here is at 2200 metres. The winds here are pretty good, even if you get an average day you can still get a descent flight time and if conditions are good you can get excellent times. Thermals are strongest in the middle of the day, but if you’re building up your flight hours the mornings and evening have more gentle conditions. The town itself is quite rustic and there are some attractive traditional buildings in the centre, it’s also known as a haven for artists.
