When I gained my Pilot's licence in 1994 I went to Marco Island in Florida for some hours building. The highlight of my stay there was a flight to the Bahamas. A flight plan had to be filed and, as the flight passed through a restricted flying area near Cuba, an estimate of the time of arrival at the restricted area had to be given.

The flight was magnificent passing firstly across the width of Florida and then past Fort Lauderdale and out across the open ocean for a distance of around 70 miles before seeing the lighter colour of the coral reefs around Grand Bahama. Landing was at Freeport and, after the formalities, a taxi took me to the beach where a few pleasant hours were spent before returning to Marco.

On the way back in the afternoon large cumulo nimbus clouds built up around the Fort Lauderdale area requiring a little cloud avoidance. A landing was made at Fort Lauderdale for immigration and customs clearance and then another hour's flight got me back to Marco Island.
