If it has ever crossed your mind that conventional fishing is a little unfair on the fish, then breath-hold spearfishing could make you feel better about eating your catch. Spearfishermen dive without breathing apparatus and pursue their prey in its own environment, using a rubber-powered spear gun to make the kill. They are able to see the fish before choosing to hunt them, eliminating the killing of young or small fish and taking only one or two per school, thereby having a minimal effect on the fish population. Organised spearfishing associations ensure that those involved take enough for their own consumption and nothing more, so the appeal for divers comes simply from the excitement and the proximity with nature gained from diving unencumbered by the usual equpiment, and pitting their wits against the fish at close quarters. The very challenging nature of the sport, aesthetic appreciation of the underwater environment and the conservation aspect set spearfishing apart from almost every other hunting experience. It has a centuries-old history, particularly in warmer climates such as that of Hawaii, where bluewater spearfishing for very large prey is as popular as the shore diving variety.

General Spearfishing

Spearfishing in general is much better for the preservation and conservation of the species. Select sizes can be taken and others can be left to propogate the species.

With the clear, blue waters of Hawaii, this can be done more effectively. Hawaii can be considered as one of the prime schooling grounds for several good species as well as offering a great way to learn the sight fishing methodology that is required for effective spearfishing.
