One of the myths about salmon-fishing is that it is impossibly expensive and exclusive. Many river owners in Scotland have woken up to the need to make access more affordable and easier, and this development has coincided with an improvement in the salmon’s fortunes due to the fall-off in netting at sea. A glance at the Tweed’s website - www.fishtweed.co.uk - will give an idea of what is around, and the cost, which can be as little as £50 a day. Other rivers, like the Dee and the Spey, are going down this democratic route. Of course, chasing salmon remains a thoroughly chancy business, and the season stretches from March or even earlier, through to November on the Tweed.
