Large sections of Mauritius’s coastline are feeding grounds for big game fish like marlin, tuna and shark. Marlin have got a reputation among fisherman of being good fighters so they’re some of the most popular of the game fish for people who want a bit of a challenge, which suits me fine. The biggest girls prey on tuna, getting even bigger, and people have caught big marlin only to open them up and find smaller marlin inside, their last meal. The girls can get up to 2000 pounds, which is why they’ll put up such a good fight. They can tire out a fisherman with their aerial acrobatics, in fact there’s a story from Mauritius I heard from the captain of the boat I went on last time I was there about one battle which lasted 26 hours before the line broke and she got free. I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve witnessed some pretty dramatic battles.

At the moment you’re encouraged to catch and release. There are a couple of different ways to catch marlin, but I use artificial lures, which you rig to bounce and create a lot of action in the water. Live baiting is also pretty popular.
