Kona is one of the homes of live bait marlin fishing, these guys have been doing it for hundreds of years, so the locals can tell you some good stories about monster marlin caught before there were records and epic battles between man and fish. These days we copy them and people tend to do more live baiting than they do in other spots – it’s a bit messy and you have to get your speed right so you don’t kill off your bait. I don’t usually live bait but I do in Kona, and it’s caught me a 700 pound blue marlin girl so I’m not going to complain. She came after a tuna, which is why the waters are so successful, tuna come through in droves over the season and the big marlin come by to snack on them. When we opened up the 700 pounder she had our tuna and another two in her gut.
Apart from the generous sized catches, the best thing about fishing in Kona is that you can fish right out of the harbor, and right along the coastline rather than having to ride a long way out to sea.
It’s always better to spend as many days as possible on the water but if you only have time for a day trip out then this is probably one of your best bets, not that there are more fish, just that you don’t have to waste as much time getting out to the fishing grounds.
