The Madeira marlin season lasts from May to October, it’s well organised and the surroundings are civilised in a very European way – well they have been doing this for a long time. The weather is mild, the wine is sweet and local and the fishing is pretty good – you can expect to hear about people wrestling 700 pounders on a daily basis in the fishermen’s taverns. Many of the operators on this stretch of coast operate a tag and release policy on the regions big billfish, but if you think you’ve got a record breaker you’ll be allowed to keep it. This makes sense considering how popular it’s been as a game fishing spot in the last 30 years. But then most people are into marlin fishing for the thrill of the catch, and the battle first to hook them and then to get them close enough to the boat to really see them struggle dramatically.
As well as marlin, wahoo and Big Eye Tuna are common in these waters.
