Lake El Salto has produced trophy bass more than 18 pound in size, and every year thousands of 10 pound plus fish are fought our of the water. They get big feeding on the local crawfish and Tilapias and the introduced Shads, brought in to satisfy the Florida strain of Largemouths that were stocked in the man made lake created when the river was dammed in the eighties.
The fishing is best between October and June, with the best fly fishing between October and February when the fish are at their most aggressive and shallow feeding. You can hope to have a fight on your hands, these bass are fighters, some of the best pound for pound action you can find in freshwater, don’t be surprised if they spit your hook and bait back out at you. On a good day you can catch 60 or 70 fish – catch and release obviously, most of them will be between 4 and 7 pounds but the big ones are out there and a few days and some local advice should help you land your own trophy.
In Mexico’s Sierra Madre range, this lake is also just a nice place to fish and a haven for serious sports fishermen. Expect shop talk in the lodges.
