Second only to Homer for halibut the deep waters of the North Gulf have been a brimming fishing ground for hundreds of years. Catches are now limited to two per person and the polite thing to do is to kiss and release anything over 60 pounds which is considered female to go make more halibut. A couple of 200 pounders are caught here every year. Most trips out will also spot whales: orcas and humpbacks and otters and porpoises which linger around Resurrection Bay where the saltwater salmon (average weight 15 pounds) run waiting for a feed. A good run will have you fighting them off your line.
