Fish grow big in these remote lakes, and as well as the snook, trout, tarpon and bass you’ll find the local special, the Northern Pike. Here this fighter can comfortably reach a metre in length, so you’ll need a decent 8 to 10 weight fly rod if you want to fly fish for them, which is a pretty thrilling way to go about it. The really big ones can get to 35 pounds but most of the trophy size are between 18 and 35. It’s all catch and release on the trophy as well as tiddler end, which is how the fish population got to be so big, and so old, the locals will tell you they think some pike in the lake are about 20 years old.
The best lures to use are big spoons or spinners and they’re pretty keen to get a bite, essentially they’re predators. Then they thrash around on the surface before taking off for some powerful runs trying to loose you.
One of the world’s best Northern Pike spots, the Reindeer Lake is dotted with islands, which makes it less likely that you’ll be fishing in view of another boat.
