Recognized as the salmon capital of the world, Barkley Sound is famous for its fishing. Located off the western shore of Vancouver Island, this area is dotted with islands no bigger than 2 km. Fishing for salmon, halibut, rockfish, sockeye, bluebacks and bottom fish are extremely popular sports in the sound. The Alberni Inlet is east of the Barkley Sound and sees its best catches from late June to summer. Charters go out from April into the summer months, although salmon fishing is possible year round due to the waters serving as a nursery for the fish. Charters usually cover the Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound and the western coast. The waters can get rough on the offshore banks and have huge ground swells in the winter months. The Barkley Sound is in the path of thousands of salmon’s migration path, which is why the fish are so abundant in the area.
