Rivers like the Test, the Itchen, and the Kennet have traditionally been regarded as providing the cream of English trout fishing. The rivers are crystal clear, full of green weed waving over golden gravel, and the trout run big. But – and it’s a big but – they are not easy to get access to, and cost a fortune. In Dorset, not much further away, the Piddle and the Frome are just as beautiful, just as rich in fish and insect life, and a lot cheaper. Both rivers have a mayfly season, generally starting in mid-May and lasting for three weeks or so, and offer challenging fly-fishing through to September.
