The Talented Mr. Ripley (Dir: Anthony Minghella, 2000).
Caffe Latino, Via de Monte Testaccio 96, Rome, Lazio, Italy
This film is an Italian travel brochure, how much did you want to go to Italy after you saw it?
I haven’t been there but the town Ripley chases Dickie and his girlfriend to is actually an island in the Bay of Naples, Ishia, in the book it’s a fictitious place. The amazing town, beaches and the beautiful villa Dickie stay in are all on the island.
I have been to most to the films Roman locations, including the ‘Nightclub Vesuvio’ jazz club (in the film it’s in Naples), which is actually called Caffe Latino. It’s not a jazz club, but more of a traditional bar/ nightclub. I also visited the café by the Fountain of the Four Rivers where Ripley runs into Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ripley’s sumptuous Roman hotel, in the film, The Grand Hotel, but in real life the St. Regis Grand off Piazza Republica, which is very very grand. I had a drink in the bar, which was grand, but if you can afford it the rooms are supposed to be grand as well. If you can afford the hotel you may also be able to afford Dickies tailor, Basttistoni in the courtyard off the Via Condotti. Probably my favourite film fact from ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ is to do with the song that they sing in Italian in the Nightclub Vesuvio, which is a song about a man who pretends he has more money and status than he really does. I learned that off the barman at the Caffe Latino, they get quite a lot of film pilgrims, so I hope it’s true.
