Carnival has become a global celebration, but you may be surprised to hear of a Rhine Valley, Beerfest inspired festival happening in Namibia’s arid interior, but that’s what Windhoek (locally called Wika) looks like.

Like its German parent, Windhoek’s programme consists of staged theatrical performances, debates, cabarets and comedy satires (some in German, some in English and some in African languages) and has a beer fuelled party atmosphere (with lots of singing and swaying.). The first day of the two week festival is the most formal with a carnival king and queen royal opening gala masked ball and plenty of food and drink. Then follow the parades and the commencement of the performances.

Regular stars of the festival are the Windhoek Royal Guard, one of Africa’s most talented dance groups. The first Windhoek was held in 1952 and it has since developed into a far more multicultural affair, with visits from performers popular in other international carnivals. Windhoek has a very formal organisational structure and programme which has seem the festival grow consistently over its lifespan, but the leather shorts slapping, beer chugging, sing along party atmosphere remains.

When does the 2010 Windhoek Carnival take place

I am planning a trip to Namibia next year and would like to include Windhoek at carnival time. Is this a good time of the year to visit the tourist sites of Namibia (eg Etosha ) ? What will the weather conditions be like?
