During the second week of every January in Breckenridge, Colorado, they go all Nordic and welcome Ullr, the mythical god of snow, to the town. The festival began in the 1960s as an add-on to the ski season, when the picturesquely snow-covered mountains and forests really are worth celebrating. Admission is free and besides skiing parties and competitions, and lots of what we know as 'apres-ski', there's also a ball, a parade, a bonfire, the 'Ullympics', the election of the Ullr King and Queen, a carnival parade and even a winter-themed dating game. The largest spin-off event, though, is the snow-sculpting competition, which has evolved into the International Snow Sculpture Championships in its own right, and is a surreal, beautiful and intriguing spectacle.
