Want to experience authentic country life? Put on your cowboy boots and leather jacket and head to the National Horse Fair. Held in November this fair celebrates the equestrian life and Portugal’s finest horse breeds, the pure-bred Lusitano, attracting breeders, horse lovers, and people from all over. Visitors are in for an exciting day, there’s bull-running, several parades - one has grooms in red-waistcoats parading around on horses - and equestrian activities, games, and exhibitions.

There are also many competitions including the Horse Driving Competition where the marathoners are in dress and they steer their horse and carriage around cones; The Endurance Ride Competition; Show jumping; Gymkana for juniors; the Portuguese Horseman Competition; The National Dressage Competition; the Three and Four-Year-Old Competition; the National Competition of Working Horses; the Horse Driving Derby and Ream Cross County.

The fair is also the place to see a traditional parade with riders and carriages and the Portuguese Traditional Riding School Show. Take a chance to wander around the market that sells everything from local wine, roasted chestnuts, and barbecued chicken to clothing that was worn by well-known horsemen of the Ribatejo region.
