The National Cherry Blossom festival is a two week event that takes place every year to celebrate the cherry blossoms that line the tidal basin in Washington DC. The blossoms were a gift from Japan to the United States in 1912, as a gesture of goodwill. When the trees blossom the people of Washington DC know spring is soon to come. The festival usually tries to coincide with the peak blooming of the trees so visitors from all over can enjoy these beautiful and fragrant blossoms.
Festival activities include a kite festival, fireworks, parade and street festival. The streets are lined with people from around the world hoping to get a glimpse of these famous flowers and a lot of the events are free which makes it easy to experience all the event There are tons of other events going on during the celebration so make sure to check the online calendar for a full list of fun happenings.
