Many Londoners dismiss the Lord Mayor's show as an excessively busy event for tourists at which you won't find a space from which to watch the proceedings anyway, but if you plan ahead, you'll be in for a rare, heart-warming display of shared patriotism and heritage-honouring.
The show, which dates back to 1215 and honours the newly elected Mayor's journey from the City to Westminster to pledge allegiance to the Crown, comprises an all-day parade from Guildhall to Temple and back, via St. Paul's Cathedral (where the grandstand seats are positioned - book them very early) and fabulous evening fireworks over the Thames, opposite Victoria Embankment.
Besides Her Majesty's Forces, marching bands and several livery companies, you'll also see the Police, London charities and magnificent, eclectic displays created by various groups of Londoners marching by. If past years are anything to go by, you can expect anything from theatre companies, gymnasts, and drum bands to local schools, vintage car clubs, and even London firms such as taxi companies, fruiterers and chandlers, keeping up with the old tradition of including guilds in the parade.
There's a real carnival atmosphere, but be sure to arrive early and avoid the Strand if you can, as that's the most crowded part.
