Hosted at the annual Crystal Carnival, Ski Joring is a local sport in which skiers are pulled behind a speeding horse, racing over a snowy obstacle course of gates, jumps and rings. Before the competition streets of Leadville are packed and paved with snow. As the horses pull racers through the streets, the skiers compete for best time and performance. The popular event attracts large crowds who line the streets to watch the half-a-century old sport. Crystal Carnival events are free for visitors. In addition to ski joring, activities include a children’s parade, snowshoe races, dog sled races, a winter mountain bike race and broomball games.

The highest incorporated city in the United States, Leadville has the second largest population in Colorado. A former silver mining town nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Leadville is worth exploring year round, but the Crystal Carnival makes it an even more appealing destination.
