Semana Santa (Peru's Holy Week)

Listed under Festivals in Ayacucho, Peru.

If you want to experience a truly joyous Easter spend it in Peru, where many small communities take it very seriously.

Holy Week celebrations in the small town of Ayacucho located high in the Andes involve the entire town. Beginning on the Friday before Palm Sunday, the town re-enacts the meeting between Christ and his Mother, then the festivities continue with parades of the pious holding candles and leading mules through the city, urged on by the audience fanning them with palms. People then re-enact other biblical stories (including the lynching of Pilate not mentioned in the bible.) and there are daily church services.

The lead up to Easter Sunday is a boisterous period of markets, music, food and parties as everyone takes the opportunity to behave in a sinful manner between mourning Christ’s death and celebrating his resurrection when they believe he isn't able to judge them. Fireworks follow the Easter Sunday mass and there is singing, dancing and more celebrations.
