This is the biggest celebration of the year in the largest city in the Basque country of Spain. The city shuts down for a week - aste nagusia means big week in Basque – and performances and indulgences draw crowds of up to 100,000. Music is the backbone of the celebration and free performances dot the city and last all night. Gastronomic pleasures come in a close second however as the local highlight, given the popularity of daily food eating contests. Between acts visitors can savor their tapas though. The city streets are lined with booths and stands offering northern Spain's fried specialties. Explore Bilbao during the festival by climbing under the bridge to watch the fireworks, known to be a great spot for spectators, and steal a stool at one of the cafes at Plaza Nueva to watch the main stage with style. Of course it won't be a Spanish festival without a dash of eccentricity, and you'll find plenty throughout the week. Our favorite is the Bilbao Strongman Contest where Basque men demonstrate thier fearlessness with insane feats of strength.
