Overlapping with, but not quite eclipsing the town's popular asparagus festival, the Schwetzinger Festspiele is a summer opera and classical music extravaganza, lasting from mid-May to early June. Conceived in 1952 with an intention to 'rediscover the old, initiate the new and provide opportunities for the young', the festival indeed draws thousands to the town to hear big names perform the music they recognise and love, but new talent literally shares the limelight in the impressive concert halls and rococo, cream and gold theatre of Schwetzingen Palace, and original operas are commissioned for each festival. Be sure to take a wander through the 18th century palace and its unusual garden, celebrated as a rare cross between the French formal and English landscaped styles, the fashions for which overlapped only briefly during the late 1700s in Europe.
