Five days and 22 venues featuring over a hundred concerts of the best of local and international folk music talent is a lot of folk music, but the National Folk Festival offers even more. Visitors to the National Folk Festival can attend storytelling (yarns) and poetry readings, including the World Poetry Debate and dance classes leading up to the Colonial and Scottish Balls. You can also visit the craft markets, attend a folk workshop or enjoy international cuisine. Artists converge on Canberra from Scotland, Canada, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Denmark the USA and France to name regular attendees, as well as from all over Australia, to share their songs, music and culture.
Organisers say they are attracting a younger market each year as more people become interested in folk music. Be warned, people dress up in folk wear for the occasion. …And people say that Canberra is staid?
