Whether it’s the eyebrow-singeing social commentary, the combination of feisty character and demure high waistlines, or just the memory of TV’s most famous soggy shirt that does it, Jane Austen’s realistic Regency romances are adored by thousands, and the Jane Austen Festival provides a chance to grab your poke bonnet and head to Bath, the writer’s home town, to indulge in a week of costumed period drama fantasy.
Besides traditional entertainments, theatre productions, walking tours, discussion groups, lectures and polite tea-drinking, this annual September outbreak of decorous behaviour involves a costumed promenade through the city’s picturesque Georgian terraces (- tickets and costume advice are available from the Jane Austen Society), and dance workshops to prepare you for the Jane Austen Regency Ball – another reason to dress up!
