Infioratas are flower fairs held during the Corpus Christi celebrations. Roads are covered in intricately patterned carpets of flowers on which the communion processions pass. Held in several Italian towns, the most famous Infioratas are held in Genzano, Spello and Pienza. In Genzano on Corpus Domini Sunday, the 250 metre long Via Belardi leading up to the church is covered in intricate patterns for the bishop to tread at sunset. As you can imagine a carpet of flowers is a difficult thing to create. Several days before the flowers must be picked, sorted into colours and stored before being laid out carefully onto designs chalked onto the road. Pride is taken in the designs which can be either patterns or depictions of folk or religious tales. The first Infioratas were held in June 1778 but stem from Vatican traditions when carpets of flowers were laid down inside the churches.
