‘My language is understood throughout the world.’ said Haydn, and as well as his music being universally understood his work is varied enough to include something for all tastes, chamber music, spiritual compositions, piano trios, string trios as well as the symphonies he was famous for (some called him the ‘father of symphony’). More than just Haydn, the Haydn Festival celebrates not just his own music but also the music he inspired, the music he listened to and the music which inspired him.
Franz Joseph Haydn lived and worked in Eisenstadt for over 40 years composing and directing the royal orchestras and the small city is littered with his legacy. The Haydn Hall with its near perfect acoustics is just one of the venues used in the festival and musical pilgrims may also want to visit the Haydnmuseum and his tomb in the Bergkirche.
Red wine is the city’s other favourite export and the vineyards which surround it may have been part of the appeal in Haydn’s day.
