Now widely recognised as ‘the Woodstock of the mind’ after Bill Clinton’s generous compliment, the Hay Festival (held annually for around ten days in May and June) is indeed a bibliophile’s utopia. The organisers are quite rightly proud to have eliminated any form of elitism from the event, which brings great talents, wannabes and readers together in an informal, accessible environment for speeches, debate forums and cream teas. The 2007 festival boasted the presence of four Nobel Laureates among its literary contributors, plus a highly respectable list of musicians and comedians. A genuine, commonly-held aim of expanding people’s spheres of knowledge really does seem to infuse the occasion and its participants' attitudes. The organisers claim that their audience is ‘made up of some of the most interesting, intellectually adventurous, socially attractive people on earth’, and the exterior beauty is amply provided by the Brecon Beacons National Park.
